Programs at the School

Escola Estrela do Mar embodies some of the fine aspects of humanity. They have an ´Adopt a Grandmother´ program here where each month a different class visits a nearby nursing home for elderly women, some of whom have been abandoned and have no visitors. Yet with this gesture there are suddenly kids all around talking to and hugging the grandmothers, bringing them joy and love. Its a very moving experience and teaches the kids many things about old age, respect for elders, kindness, compassion and giving.

I went along on the most recent visit with the kids, the idea being that we could sing a song that we had been learning. Its a kind of call and reponse song which I play on the Berimbau. It was really rewarding to offer this to the elderly women and also to see how much the kids had already learned from my classes.

Below is a video I made about the visit. Its also the first video that Ive written music to which was an amazing experience. I played and recorded the guitar parts, added other sounds and then also used some vocals from my dear friend Behiye that we recorded at a rehearsal in my studio in Sydney earlier this year.

If you actually click on the video below where it says “You Tube” it will open a new window with a much larger player. The video is in High Definition – so click that little HD button for maximum enjoyment!

  1. Wow…is that really my voice? i am so moved and humbled. Look how easily such beautiful music can come together when we just let it….
what a wonderful program and idea to have the young and old connect once a month in this way. did you make up the call and response song or is it traditional capoeira chant? I have been wanting to implement rhythm and chant for the kids program i’m writing, the idea being that they empower themselves with their own words….
THANKS for your efforts in putting this together and for making me a part of something so important…
    love xxxx

  2. yes my dear it’s your voice. amazing what happens when we push the record button in a rehearsal/jam isn’t it? Can’t wait to do more with you soon.

All the songs I teach the kids are traditional Capoeria songs. I had no idea how perfectly they would work for learning music. They are musically simple, and the kids are empowered cos they have their own part when Im not singing. (In this video they sang with me, but thats cos they were a bit nervous and forgot).

In my classes, Once they are comfortable with the songs, I then divide the class, 1/2 do the call, 1/2 do the resposne and eventually move to solos. going around the circle with each person singing the call part on their own. Its a little risky as if they’re not ready they can close down a bit with stage fright. But if you support them through it, its OK. I have good results so far. This is all modeled on what Jeronimo taught me over the years. Thanks J!

    • ok…pretty simple then…i will use chants composed by the kids themselves. Yes, thanks Jeronimo for the inspiration!

  3. The tears are rolling down my cheeks. So beautiful Carty. Haunting music.

  4. wonderful project – maybe they will keep their own parents at home and close to their hearts when they grow old – and maybe loose fear of being around someone who is dying.
Behiye – your voice sounds beautiful!
    Congratulations to the whole project
    be blessed

  8. Hey Paul, WOW, what an absolutely moving and amazing video. Thank you for sharing it. How are you ever going to leave the school and those lovely smiling & beautiful children?…You look as though you have lost your heart already! (How could you not!) How wonderful to be in such an environment where love, music and laughter is so freely given by all.
Fantastic. As for Behiye’s voice….mere words would not do it justice… So haunting and beautiful. LOL Jackie B

  9. Anne and I were really moved to see the wonderful work you are doing there. Visiting those old ladies would have been a great moment for both the kids and the old folk. Having the joy and laughter around them would have been such a tonic.

The music and presentation of the video is outstanding

    We are proud of you
