Escola Estrela do Mar – Brasil

Outside the School Walls

Below is a video I compiled that shows some slices of daily life around Maceio, Brazil. It gives examples of the vibrant colours, the easy going happiness as well as the challenging conditions some people face.

We interview a group of women sitting outiside their housing complex with no running water or functioning bathrooms. David Leiner, founder of Starfish School, is the American man who is asking them questions and translating. We talk to them about schooling, health and their homes.

The sound track to this movie is another original work. “Invisible Ones” was written by Behiye Suren, and produced and recorded by Paul Cartwright and Garry Luke, and played by all 3 of us. We recorded it at a house in Jervis Bay, NSW earlier this year. This version is a rehearsal/demo but I think its good enough for the movie.

“Invisible Ones” is about displaced and repressed people, so it is kind of a fitting soundtrack to this movie.

If you actually click on the video below where it says “You Tube” it will open a new window with a much larger player. The video is in High Definition – so click that little HD button for maximum enjoyment!

Enjoy…

  4. Paul, your videos and stories are constantly engaging and thought provoking.. and on top of this beautifully crafted… I’m amazed you find the time to create all of these, as well as develop your own music curriculum!

    • Thanks Michael, in the week before I left Sydney I spent more money than I probably should have on my first ever video equipment. I kept my fingers crossed that I had made the right purchases and I could achieve the vision in my head for movies. Well now after two months of constant filming and editing I have no regrets – it has worked out better than I expected, and is a wonderful way to convey ideas and stories…I have about 80GB of footage now – Yikes!
